Admission Ticket Information
What is included with your admission ticket?
Your entrance ticket includes access to a short, approximately 30-minute guided introduction provided by the Schloss- und Gartenverwaltung.
What does this guided introduction cover?
This is a brief overview of the entrance area, staircase, White Hall, and (if time allows) the Imperial Hall. It does not include the other 40+ rooms, the impressive Court Chapel, the exterior, or the Residence court gardens.
The introduction is conducted in a group setting and is intended as a general overview with limited depth and limited opportunity for questions. In some cases, groups can be quite large (25–50 people), which may make it difficult to hear or follow clearly. In addition, several other groups (sometimes 3–10) may be nearby at the same time, and in areas such as the staircase it can become very loud, making it difficult to hear the introduction.
A private guided tour avoids these limitations and provides a more comfortable, high-quality, and personalized experience.
Important: Entry Ticket Requirement
An admission ticket is always required to enter the Würzburg Residence.
Even when paying for a certified guided tour, entry is not possible without a valid ticket.
The official Residence Palace entrance fee at the door is €10 per person but does not guarantee access if depending on availability, if not reserved through our system. Click here to order.
This requirement for an admission ticket and a certified guide is standard across all palaces and castles in Europe, including sites such as the Würzburg Residence, Versailles, Schönbrunn Palace, Neuschwanstein Castle, and all other historic landmarks.
Certified Guides Information
Certified Guides & the Certified Guided Tour
Certified guides are licensed professionals who provide a comprehensive, in-depth experience that goes far beyond the short introductory tour included with your ticket.
With a guided tour you will not participate in the included 30-minute public introduction tour. Instead, your guide will lead you through the Residence as part of your own dedicated experience.
Without a certified guided tour, you’ll simply wander through the Residence on your own and miss the key details, history, and stories that bring it to life—making it far from a true experience. On busy days, you may also be rushed through the palace to accommodate the other 5,000-10,000 visitors entering.
Certified guides provide:
- A fully private experience for your group only
- Detailed historical context, stories, and insights
- Flexible pacing and time for questions
- A much more engaging and personalized visit
Why is there an additional cost for a certified guide?
Inside the Residence, guided tours are strictly regulated. Only officially certified Residence guides are permitted to lead tours through the main state rooms. This means that, regardless of the service you book with us, a licensed guide must be engaged separately for the interior tour.
The additional cost covers this mandatory certified Residence guide, which is required by the Residence for any interior guided tour. This fee is not included in the price of your tour booking, as it is a separate service that must be provided by an officially licensed guide. Without engaging a certified guide, a guided tour inside the Residence cannot take place.
Only certified guides can lead tours in the residence
The Residence officially states that only guides who are certified are permitted to guide tours in the Würzburg Residence.
Our Escort & Guide
Before the guided tour, your tour escort will meet you at the entrance of the Residence and provide a brief introduction, including general history and information about the surrounding buildings. After the certified guided portion inside the Würzburg Residence, the tour escort (tour leader, group coordinator, or host) will continue accompanying the group through the remaining rooms and publicly accessible areas—such as the Court Chapel and the Residence Gardens—without providing an official guided tour inside restricted interiors. This is permitted and acceptable. The escort can also share general information and context about the areas the group is visiting.
What is a tour escort ?
A tour escort is permitted to accompany the group through other parts of the Würzburg Residence after the official tour because accompanying a group is not the same as conducting the official guided tour. The Residence’s rule is that only certified guides are allowed to lead guided tours inside the main parts of the Residence.
So the distinction is:
The certified Residence guide provides the official interpretation and guided commentary in the areas where the Residence requires authorized guiding. An escort, tour leader, or host may still remain with the group afterward for coordination and assistance, such as helping with timing, movement through the building, logistics, meeting points, and overall group management. That role is operational, not interpretive, and does not replace the required certified guide. This is why it is acceptable: the escort is accompanying the group, not acting as the Residence’s official guide. This follows from the Residence’s rule restricting who may guide, rather than who may simply accompany a group.
